I knew I wanted to a be midwife at age 16. From the first moment I found out what a midwife was, something deep inside me said that is what you were meant to do. I always wanted to be part of women empowerment professional calling, but didn’t know exactly what. I was always frustrated with societal sexist comments, stereotypical responsibilities of women in our society, and glass ceiling effect women had on them. Now I know that glass ceiling effect is all in my mind, but that is a blog post for another day. My mind has evolved with life experiences, political trends around midwifery, and cultural norms around the birth experience.
If you would have asked the teenager me, “Are you going to support midwives all over world start their own private practices?” I would have thought you were nuts and never even imagined that as part of my midwifery path. I wanted a simple home birth practice caring for Amish in my community. I met an amazing man that has allowed me to pursue whatever adventure has come our way. Three amazing sons born at home and years of business courses later has brought down the direction of business consultation services.
I truly love supporting a woman during birth and holding her hand, but my internal drives look at bigger pictures and systems of support. Being able to serve woman on a larger scale with supporting other midwives creating successful midwifery practices will allow more women to have access to midwifery.
I am so grateful that midwifery has found me at an early age and changed the course of my life’s work. I can’t imagine another profession that has such a large impact on our society’s future success. Being able to provide empowering, normal birth and lactation support options betters our future generations. We are in a trying time of medical birth competing with women’s rights and trusting her body’s amazing power to grow and birth her baby in the best way she sees fit. I will continue to use my love and passion for midwifery to serve families with my private home birth practice and business advice through Midwifery Business Consultation.
